Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (also known as cardio-metabolic syndrome) is a cluster of controllable conditions, including:

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Elevated insulin levels
  • Excess body fat around the waist, or having an “apple shaped” body type, in which there is more weight above the waist.
  • Abnormal cholesterol levels

that occur together, increasing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Having just one of these conditions is not diagnosed as metabolic syndrome, but it does raise your risk. If more than one of these conditions occur in combination, your risk is increased even greater.
