Revisiting The Benefits Of Red Wine

You may be sipping merlot or pinot noir because you’ve heard that red wine is rich in resveratrol, a substance that has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes.

But if you’re already a healthy woman, resveratrol won’t provide greater benefits, suggests a recent study conducted by the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis.

Researchers looked at 29 post-menopausal women who were reasonably healthy. For 12 weeks, half the women took a placebo and half received a resveratrol supplement. Both groups were tested for insulin sensitivity, and researchers found no differences between the two groups.

However, there’s still evidence that people who drink red wine are less likely to develop heart disease or diabetes, say the Washington University experts, suggesting that some other element of red wine may be beneficial to your health.
